IMATS Tips and Tricks

I cannot believe IMATS NYC is only days away. IMATS stands for International Makeup Artist Trade Show. You do not have to be a makeup artist or work in the industry to attend. This event is open to public and if you are a makeup junkie like us, this is the holy grail event for makeup lovers. During the event, thousands of make-up artists, exhibitors and enthusiasts discuss, display and collect the best the industry has to offer. Make-up pros from fashion and film (including Oscar, BAFTA and Saturn award winners) provide education and demonstrations at IMATS, and new products often debut there. IMATS also features a make-up museum and the Battle of the Brushes student make-up competitions, where international make-up students race to create winning looks. The event is held in NYC, LA, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney and London.

Last year was our first experience and it was AMAZING. We got to meet so many youtube stars and scored so many good deals. You can score items that are 10-75% off. Below are our tips and tricks that will help you out if this will be your first time at IMATS or if you are looking to go next year.

1. Buy your tickets EARLY. Once tickets go on sale, buy them ASAP. It's a 3 day event, but the first day is only for PRO-Makeup Card Holders, meaning you need to have a license and or be in beauty school. Saturday and Sunday are open to the PUBLIC so, take your pick or you can go on both days. Tickets do sell out way in advance. So, if your set on going, buy it ASAP. Don't expect to get tickets at the door.

2.  Create your wish list. The website will have a list of vendors, so you can plan out what you really need and what you want to buy. That way when you get there you know exactly what you want and how much you're going to spend. Also include backups, because things can sell out quickly.

3. Call your credit card company or bank before you go to the show. Because there are so many vendors, they will be from all over the states. So, even though the show is in NYC, the vendors could be from California, Florida, etc and once your card is swiped your credit card will be alerted and your account may be frozen. This happened to me last year. I was not expecting that. But, one phone call took care of that and I was able to swipe my card again.

4. Bring CASH. Some vendors only take cash or offer a bigger discount when you pay all cash.

5. Take a Friend or 2. As they say, the more the merrier. You can all plan and attack and decide who will stay on what line and get what items, which will save so much time. Trust me, last year my cousins and I did this and we were done by 11 am. We divided and conquered! Plus you will always have someone that will be able to take your pics with your fave youtube stars.

6. Dress comfortably. You will be doing a lot of walking and standing. So, skip the stilettos and wear flats, wedges or sneakers. Trust me your feet will be thanking you at the end of the day. Comfort over style for this day is a must.

7. When to go? If you are like us, we like to go first thing in the morning. So, we arrived an hour and a half before it opened and there was already such a huge line in front of us. But, trust me it is worth the wait. When you walk in the door it turns into the Hunger Games : Makeup Edition. People will be running to their favorite vendors to make sure they get in line first. Because we went early the lines weren't so bad. You can also go towards the end of the day. People tend to leave towards the end of the afternoon and lines start to die down.

8. Check instagram and twitter for updates. Sometimes vendors have promos or are running contest. So, keep checking and you might be able to snag some free swag. You can also find out when your fave youtube stars are having their meet and greet. That way you will be able to snag that selfie with them.

9. Bring some makeup removers. You will be swatching non-stop. So, your hands are gonna look like a hot mess by the time its all over. Some vendors had some available but, its always nice when you have your own.

10.  Make sure to take some breaks and eat. The venue does provide some food, but it's overpriced and not worth it. So, bring some snacks. You can also leave the venue and re-enter as many times as you wish.

Hope you all enjoyed reading these tips! Have any of you gone to IMATS or are thinking about it? Please tell us your experience we would love to know. Below are some of our highlights from last year.

February 2016 Ipsy Bag

It's that time of the month. Another IPSY unveiling.  For those who don't know, Ipsy is a beauty subscription service created by youtube sensation Michelle Phan. For $10 a month, you will receive a makeup bag containing 4-5 deluxe beauty samples. Each month varies, but its always worth way more than the $10 you paid for. The theme for February 2016 was called "Pretty In #IPSYPINK". The card was so cute and featured the Ipsy Girls in the one of my fave 80s movie, of course Pretty In Pink. I thought it was a cute concept for the month of Februry. The products that I received were Mor Emporium Classics Hand and Body Lotion in Candied Vanilla, Naked Cosmetics Mica Pigment, Luxie Beauty Flat Definer Brush 221, Vintage by Jessica Liebeskind Sparking Lipgloss and Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer Oil. This bag was a 50/0 for me.

The bag is so cute and it reminds me so much of my childhood of when I use to play with my tamogotchi. I think I just made myself sound so old. LOL. Its textured in the front and all pink in the back.

Mor Emporium Classics Hand & Body Lotion in Candied Vanilla
A luxurious Hand & Body Lotion enriched with Macadamia and Soybean Oils, Shea Butter and Vitamin E that leaves skin feeling supple. Sweet almond extract and argan oil deeply moisturizes and leaves skin delicately scented.
  • Free from mineral oils, parabens, synthetic dyes and sulphates
  • This product is not tested on animals
I've never heard of this brand but I do love the scent of vanilla. So I think this smells amazing!!!! It's a travel size hand and body lotion so it's def going in my purse and will be great for when I travel.

Naked Cosmetics Mica Pigment
Naked Cosmetics is the purest, most natural make-up that exists. Naked Pigments are 100% oxidized Mica, and do not contain talc, oil, wax or other fillers that can be harmful to your skin. It is 100% color to give you a pure product that is non-allergenic, non-perishable, and simply beautiful.
  • High pigment
  • Natural and Non Comedogenic
  • Flexible use - pigments can be used for eyes, face, lips, nails and body
  • Blends well with other colors and products
I've heard of this brand from IMATS, but never bought it cause I thought it was too expensive. The color that I received was Sierra Nevada. It's very shimmery. Love the color, very neutral and def me. But, packaging is too bulky and because it is a pigment it is too messy. So, I don't think I would ever repurchase this.

Luxie Beauty Flat Definer Brush 221
Luxie Beauty’s small tapered blending brush 221 is held by a luscious pink handle and enticing rose gold ferrule. Handcrafted with synthetic bristles, this vegan makeup brush is both cruelty-free and paraben-free. Coated in a revolutionary antibacterial solution, the brush is fresh and clean on the skin. The tight density of the brush creates a precise makeup application. Extremely soft on the skin, this brush is the answer to extreme definition and control.
  • Cruelty and paraben-free
  • Vegan
  • Coated with Antibacterial Solution
I've seen these brushes on youtube, but never bought it. I don't normally have any negative things to say about brushes. This is another one to add to my collection.

Vintage by Jessica Liebeskind Sparking Lipgloss
Give your lips a glittery glow with VINTAGE by Jessica Liebeskind’s Sparkling Lipgloss. This sheer, reflective formula provides luminous shine and sophisticated shimmer. It can be worn alone, over your favorite lipstick or with a lip pencil for a perfectly polished pout.
  • Subtle sparkle with long-lasting shine
  • Soft color that compliments all skin tones
  • Blends easily with other lip colors for customized shades
  • Ultra nourishing and comfortable
This was another brand that I've never heard of. This is a mini sample sized lipgloss. Its too shimmery for me, but I do like the color. But, I hate the applicator. Its like a nail polish brush, but for your lips. At least there's no scent.

Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer Oil
The Power of a Primer. The Luxury of a Face Oil.
Fall in love with your skin — before you put on makeup — with the first ever primer specially formulated in a lightweight, lustrous oil. This fast-absorbing hero blend of 15 essential and lipid-rich plant oils penetrate instantly to moisturize your face for seamless foundation application with a dewy, youthful finish. In fact, you might think twice before you reach for your makeup.
  • Softens complexion to make foundation look like skin
  • Instantly absorbs and adds radiance
  • 15 essential and lipid-rich plant oils including moisturizing jojoba and calming chamomile
  • Apply a few drops to split-ends, cuticles, elbows and clavicle for a dewy, youthful sheen
I've heard so many great things about this and was super excited that I received this in my bag this month. I have dry skin so I love trying new oils that will moisturize my face. So, far I'm really liking it. It also smells like lavender which is a plus for me.

Lip Product Tag

Happy Almost Friday everyone. I was tagged by emilymaltby to do the lip product tag. Since I am a makeup junkie, I couldn't wait to complete this tag. Swatches of my favorites shades are down below as well.

What is your favourite balm or treatment?

Lately I have been loving my EOS lip balm. I have one at work. I have one at home. I have one in whatever purse I have that day. No matter what, I always wear this. I hate having chapped lips, so this is always with me no matter what.

What is your favourite eye-catching red?

My favorite eye-catching red has to be my Revlon Color Burst Matte Lip Balm in the shade Standout. It's a bit on the pricey side for a drugstore brand at $9.49, but they always have sales.

What is your favourite nude?

My favorite nude lippie has to be my L'oreal Colour Riche Lipcolour in the shade Fairest Nude. This lipstick is very moisturizing and is perfect for any occasion, whether at work or out on the town.

Best luxury and drugstore product?

My favorite luxury lip product are my Stila Stay All Day® Liquid Lipsticks. It's one of the best liquid lipsticks that I own. It really does stay on all day, even through eating and drinking. As long as you moisturize this doesn't feel dry on my lips either. It cost $24, but its def worth it. My favorite shade is Aria. It's great for fall and winter. My favorite drugstore product are my Wet n' Wild MegaLast Lip Colors. These are very pigmented, moisturizing and cheap. It cost only $2.99 and sometimes they have great sales and its even cheaper. My favorite shades are Bare it All and Cherry Bomb.

Best Mac lipstick?

Can you believe, I do not own anything by MAC. But, if I had to, I would definitely buy Ruby Woo and Velvet Teddy.

Most disappointing lip product?

This one has to be the Kardashian Beauty Lip Sets. The packaging and the color was nice, but the smell. OMG! It was so bad. No wonder these were in the clearance section.

Lipliner: yes or no?

I hardly ever wear lipliners. I'm too lazy to do that extra step. So, that's a NO 99.9% of the time. But, I do own a couple of lipliners.

Favourite lipgloss?

My favorite lipgloss are the NYX butterglosses. They are so pigmented and the color selections are beyond amazing. They also smell great. My favorite shade is Crème Brulee. I already went through 2 tubes of these.

Colourpop order...Cyber Monday Order. LOL!

This posts has been way over due. But, my cousin and I made an order Colorpop and got some Ultra Matte Liquid Lips and Lippie Stixs on Cyber Monday when they had a 20% off deal. It was madness trying to get this order in. The deal was so good the website kept crashing. They even had to extend it to Tuesday. My cousin Geri tried ordering at night but she had no luck. She tried about 3 times and nothing. But, I waited it out till almost 1am NYC time and my order finally went through. I purchased a ton for me and my cousin. Until my order went through I was not gonna sleep. Perseverance paid off!!! The shipping was really fast. Less than a week and my order was here. I was so excited to try these out and the packaging was just adorable. Star Wars was just coming out that weekend so I thought that was such a cute reference for the card.

Since everything was 20% the ultra matte liquid lipsticks were only $4.80 and the lippie stixs were $4. It was such a great deal we could not pass it up. Originally its $6 and $5 respectively, so it was still a good deal no matter what. This order definitely was one of those things youtube made me buy. We tried to control ourselves and had to keep going back on the website and youtube videos to see all the swatches. All the colors are so pretty. My cousin and I have similar taste so we ended up picking up similar shades.

But the shades that I had were :
Ultra Matte Liquid lipstick-Stingraye
Lippie Stix- Peppermint (Matte), Grunge (Matte), Lumiere (Matte)

My cousin got the shades :
Ultra Matte Liquid lipsticks - Avenue, Solow, Trap, Beeper and Tulle
Lippie Stix - Lumiere (Matte), Tootsi (Matte), Bichette (Matte), Skimpy(Glossy)

swatched by my 6 year old niece: bichette, tootsi, skimpy and lumiere

swatched by my 6 year old niece : avenue, tulle, trap, beeper and solow

So even though the colors look very similar in the tube, it swatches quite differently as you can see. The color payout is amazing. One swipe and you are good to go. These are drying so please exfoliate and use lip balm before you put these on. But, they smell yummy and go on so easily. They also last all day.

Have you tried colourpop before? What's your favorite shade? Comment down below.

January 2016 Ipsy Bag

It's that time of the month. Another IPSY unveiling.  For those who don't know, Ipsy is a beauty subscription service created by youtube sensation Michelle Phan. For $10 a month, you will receive a makeup bag containing 4-5 deluxe beauty samples. Each month varies, but its always worth way more than the $10 you paid for. The theme for January 2016 was called "All Eyes On You". I thought it was a cute concept and 4 out of 5 of my products were for my eyes. The products that I received were theBalm Cosmetics Mr.Write (Now) eyeliner, Jelly Pong Pong Fairy Lashes Curl, Hikari Cosmetics Cream Metallic Shadow Pigments, Pur~lisse Blue LOTUS 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum and Lasting Smiles Lip Balm in Peppermint Crème.

The bag is definitely something different and something that I don't own. I love the 60's pop art vibe that its giving off and I love how it goes with the theme of the month.

theBalm Cosmetics Mr.Write (Now) eyeliner :
These pencils deliver the long-lasting color you've been looking for, and have built-in sharpeners so they are always ready when you are. With high payoff and a satin smooth texture, these are perfect for any day of the week.  This was a full size product and the color I received was Jac which is a very rich bronze color. Since, it is a bronze shade, its not too dramatic on the eyes and it does last all day for me.

Jelly Pong Pong Fairy Lashes Curl Mascara :
Fairy Lashes CURL is a sculpting mascara that continually curls lashes throughout the day with a unique synthesis of Moringa Seed resin that holds the curl of lashes for long-lasting results. This mascara creates dramatic volume and intense definition, while allowing eyelashes to remain spectacularly soft and light at the same time. This is a fullsized, waterproof mascara and is fragrance-free. I still haven't tried this out yet, but I'll update this once I do.

Hikari Cosmetics Cream Metallic Shadow Pigments :
This cream-to-powder eyeshadow has a super lightweight feel and goes on extra smooth. This was another full sized product and the shade I received was Mink. In the container it looks like another bronze shade, but when swatched it's totally different. When you first swatch touch it's so pigmented on your finger, but once swatched the color fades away but the shimmer is def there. I was quite disappointed to see that. I think this could be used more as a highlight. As of now, I'm not really sure I like this product.

Pur~lisse Blue LOTUS 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum :
Blue Lotus eye serum is enhanced with active ingredients like French marine plants, Matrixyl 3000 and Haloxyl that bring 4 times the power against aging. This formula works together to fight against wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness, while hydrating and lifting the delicate eye area. This is a sample size and perfect for traveling. I've used it for 2 days. Not much of a difference yet, but I'm gonna keep trying it out.

Lasting Smiles Lip Balm in Peppermint Crème :
Lasting Smiles® lip balms are organic and fairtrade certified with pure and moisturizing ingredients sourced from small scale global farming cooperatives. With coconut oil, shea, and cocoa butter for soft hydrated and healthy lips. Smile for a Cause®  For every 1,000 lip balms sold one cleft lip surgery is funded --- transforming a child's life forever! I love how this funds a great cause and it smells like peppermint.

Sephora Favorites Perfume Sampler

This is one of the best ways to buy perfumes at Sephora. They usually have these gift sets all year round and I usually see that they change up the selections quite a few times. Prices ranges from $60-$65 dollars. But, with that you are able to sample quite a few perfume selections. This box set includes 13 fragrances to sample. That way you get to try it on and see how you really like the scent. Sometimes just smelling it in the store doesn't do it any justice. Once, you pick your favorite one you are able to redeem your very own full size bottle. I think its a very great deal especially whenever Sephora has their 20% off sale. I stock up on these. I bought this awhile ago when they had the VIB sale and got it for $52. That means I get a luxury perfume for only $52. The most expensive perfume you can redeem is worth $100 so its definitely a steal.

This set contains:
  • $85 - 0.06 oz Atelier Cologne Cèdre Atlas spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $54 - 0.06 oz Burberry Brit Sheer Eau de Toilette spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $75 - 0.04 oz Chloe Love Story Eau de parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $55 - 0.05 Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau de Toilette dabber (Scent Certificate redeems for 0.8 oz)
  • $45 - 0.05 oz Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gioia Eau de Parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $70 - 0.05 oz Gucci Bamboo Eau de parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $60 - 0.06 oz Jimmy Choo Eau de parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1.3 oz)
  • $70 - 0.04 oz Marc Jacobs Mod Noir Eau de parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $54 - 0.05 oz Prada Candy Florale Eau de Toilette spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $48 - 0.06 oz Stella Eau de Toilette spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $68 - 0.05 oz Tocca Isabel Eau de Parfum dabber (Scent Certificate redeems for 1.7 oz)
  • $80 - 0.05 oz Tom Ford Black Orchid Eau de Parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1 oz)
  • $100 - 0.05 oz Tory Burch Tory Burch Absolu Eau de Parfum spray (Scent Certificate redeems for 1.7 oz)

Important: Redeem at Sephora store Not SiJCP or online.

I think I've probably purchased at least 4 of these gift sets. If you don't want to take the plunge and actually buy this, you can always just ask for samples and once they run out you can just go back again for more. What's your favorite perfumes at Sephora?
