Feeling Inspired
Today in school, I attended a meeting for the aviation club (I'm an aviation management major student) because there was an alumni coming in talking about her experience in my school and where she is now.
She graduated 2010 and has accomplished so much within a span of 6 years. For privacy reasons, let's say her name is Vee. So Vee started in 2008, during her time in school she became involved with many school clubs and even held positions in the student government and the aviation clubs. On top of all the clubs and the extracurricular activities, Vee maintained a high GPA and worked in the school as an assistant in the Aviation department.
With her three years and 3 months in school, she had 3 internships. One for the FAA, one for the Port authority and one for an airline company. She gained so much experience during this time and explained how much difficulty she endured. Even though she struggled with school, activities, transportation, and internships she knew it would be all worth it in the end.
Apparently Vee didn't plan her classes right and did not graduate within her 3-year mark, which was her goal. She was short 3 credits and thought it was a great opportunity to study abroad in Brazil. She learned the culture, the language and lived the life as a Brazilian for a semester.
Vee had built up her network from the FAA, Port Authority, JFK and other conferences she attended and applied to jobs, but sadly had no responses. 4 Months went by and she still didn't receive any response from any company.
One day while applying to other jobs, she randomly attended an aviation meeting thinking she would just sit in the back and only listen to the guest speaker. The guest speaker ended up being a manager at JFK airport, who Vee happened to hear about through her networking. She ended up talking to the manager and hit it off . She got a job at JFK in the private sector of the general aviation side of the airport.
During her stay in JFK, Vee was able to travel to 20 different countries within a span of a few months. Australia, Europe, Central America...you name it, she was probably there.
Vee moved on from the job and wanted to do more and give back to the community by joining the Peace Corps. Yes, the Peace Corps. She volunteered and was accepted into the program, having to live 2 years in Peru. She helped an area of the country where there were individuals who were stricken into extreme poverty.
Once this part of her life was over she came back to the U.S. and had job offers coming from all sides of America. California, New York, Seattle, and Washington D.C.
She is now in the midst of moving to Washington D.C. to continue helping people.
After she told her whole life story I was inspired to continue with what I am doing which is keep working as an assistant in the aviation department, constantly participate with my school's extracurricular activities, keep up with my internships and network.
I have already completed an internship in Greece working for Athens international airport, maintained a 3.6 GPA and now I am attending a Woman in Aviation Conference in Nashville, Tennesse in March, where I can hopefully network and spread the word about my school's Aviation Program and have it sponsored.
