25 things I've Learned In 25 years

October 22, 2014 1 Comments A+ a-

But, in all honesty,  I cannot believe I just celebrated my 25th birthday this past weekend. It's surreal how fast time flies by. Before, I know it, I'l be celebrating another milestone and I just want to share some of the things that I have learned in the past 25 years.

25. Ask for Help! When I was younger I would be too scared to ask for help.  But, as you grow up, you realize a lot of people are just as clueless as you are and it's better to ask for help in the beginning then when you are knee deep in trouble.

24. Relax! When shit hits the fan, there is no going back. So, don't cry over split milk. Just assess the situation and move on. There is no reason why you need to make a big deal over nothing. You can't change what just happened. But, you can fix the situation that you are in. So, just breathe and fix it.

23. Be on Time! This was one of my biggest pet peeves growing up. I hate people who are running late. When a time and date is set in place, you stick to it. I understand that problems may arise, but let the person know. This tip will come handy especially when you go on job interviews and have deadlines at work. It's always better to be early than late.

22. Travel! If you can afford it, please do. Traveling to other countries and experiencing new cultures, food, sights and adventures are memories that I will have for the rest of my life. It's amazing when you get out and explore. Even if you cannot afford to travel, I'm sure there are places in your own city that you haven't explored yet. Go and explore until you can say I've seen it all.

21. Save Money! I know this might sound really dumb. But, people need to save money and make sure they have funds for that rainy day. You never know what curveball life will throw at you and it is better you have something tucked away. I say save at least 20% of your paycheck if you can at minimum.

20. Never Stop Learning! A lot of people will probably be out of school, but that doesn't mean that the learning will stop. Take an online class. Learn a language. Learn something. We are still young and have so much to learn.

19. It's OK to say NO. At, the end of the day you have to decide what makes you happy. You need to be selfish and let people know No means NO.

18. Don't Be Afraid of Change! I'm guilty of this and still need to work on this. Life is always changing and that is something that we cannot stop. So, instead of fearing it, we need to embrace it.

17. Spend Time With Your Parents! A lot of us have moved out or will move out and think how awesome it is that we are free from our parent's reign. But, as we are growing older, so are they. Please spend some time with them. Even if the conversations are very mundane I can guarantee that it means the world to them. They won't be around forever.

16. Have a Bucketlist!  A bucketlist makes you strive for the things and trust me when you are able to check that thing off your list you will feel incredible.

15. Work Hard! Nothing will ever be handed to you on a silver platter. You will need to work your ass off in order to achieve what you want in life.

14. Network! In this day and age, it's all about connections. WHO you know, is more important that WHAT you know. Go out and socialize and meet as many people as you can. They will be a big asset to your life especially when it comes time to applying for schools or jobs,

13. You Can Hear Your Maternal Clock Ticking Getting Louder! Growing older, the thought of kids of whether I want my own or to adopt really sets in. These are just a few things that you really have to think hard on. Like they said, you aren't getting any younger.

12. You Need Some Alone Time! I love hanging out with my friends, but there comes a point where I just want to be alone. Having some quality ME time is very important.

11. Value Your Own Opinion! Don't get pressured into something you don't want to do. If you want the blue couch but everyone else is saying black, you buy the blue. It's great to ask for second opinions, but the ultimate decision is up to you.

10. Never Lower Your Standards! This is the stage where a lot of my friends are getting engaged and having babies and everyone asks when will it be my turn. A lot of people think my standards are way too high. But, I know what I want and I'm not willing to settle.

9. Dress Your Age! If you are 25 please don't dress like you're 5. We don't want to see Barney or Sesame Street anywhere near your body, unless you have a kid and they put that sticker on you and you just want to be a good parent.

8. Do Not Compare Your Life to Others! You don't know their story and even if you do, you shouldn't compare and judge. You have to live your life and live it the best way you can or else you will never be happy.

7. Love Yourself! If you don't learn to love yourself, no person or any amount of makeup will make you feel loved. You need to look in the mirror and know that you are special.

6. It's Only A Bad Day! We all have those days where we don't want to face the world. But, we have to realize that it's only a bad day and not a bad life. This will past and something good will come.

5. Dating Is Annoying! Most of the time it's pretty awkward. But, you realize alot about yourself on those. You realize all the things you want and don't want in a relationship. It can be a growing experience and those bad dates will always be a topic of conversation.

4.  High School Never Stops! Those cliques and mean girls will be there in college and then it will follow you in the workforce. You just learn how to be cordial and work with the people that surround you. Not everyone is going to like you and you just have to accept that.

3. Be Happy! You're alive. Be thankful for that and just be happy. Life is too short to be bitter.

2. People Change! Who I was when I was 10, 15, 20 is not who I am today. So, the friendships that you had in the past might not survive either and you need to be ok with that. People change and no longer fit in with the person that you are now and you just have to let them go.

1.  It's OK to be Scared About Life! I spent the first half of my twenties, worrying about my future. But, I soon realized that it's ok to not know everything or be at a place in my life where I thought I should have been. I learned to let go and realize that if it's meant to be it will.
